Two young men from Guwahati were lynched by a mob in Karbi Anglong district after fake messages were circulated about child lifters.

Nilotpal Das, a businessman from Goa and his fiend Abhijeet Nath, had gone for a picnic in Kangthilangso waterfall in Karbi Anglong district. The duo were busy clicking pictures of themselves and were talking to some children. They were unaware of the fact that they were being suspected as xopadhora or child lifters.

On their way back to Guwahati, they had stopped to ask direction. In the meantime, a mob of over 100 villagers pulled them out of their car and thrashed them brutally until they were dead.

Both of them kept pleading for their lives, but were beaten till death.

The prime reason for this horrifying ac is said to be a message that has been circulating over whatsapp warning the people about child abductors. Since the two men looked like foreigners the villagers assumed that they were child lifters.

This is not the first time that such and incident is taking place. Fake whatsapp messages had earlier claimed lives. A man in Jharkhand was who was rumored to be a child lifter was lynched by a mob. Later he was found not guilty. A Tamil Nadu woman was also beaten on the streets for the very same reason. She later succumbed to her injuries.

These series of killing question the lack of vigilance of the content that is being circulated in whatsapp and other social media platforms. There is no way to find the source as to who has created the message.

The people have called for protests in Assam to get justice to Nilotpal and Abhijeet.
