Heatwaves are expected to persist in a large part of the world throughout the month of August, according to a senior adviser on extreme heat. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has stated that temperatures in North America, Asia, North Africa, and the Mediterranean are likely to reach above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) for an extended period of time as the heatwave intensifies.

This comes in the wake of recent record-breaking temperatures. Senior Extreme Heat Adviser for the WMO, John Nairn, highlighted the need to expect and plan for these extreme heatwaves to continue throughout August. Southern Europe is currently facing a record-breaking heatwave, creating concerns about health risks and potential casualties during the peak summer tourist season. Similarly, the lives of millions of individuals in the United States have been disrupted, with sweltering heat affecting areas from Southern California to the Deep South.

The Middle East has also experienced intense heat. Nairn emphasized that climate change is contributing to the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, and they are spreading across different seasons. He stated that rising global temperatures are a clear indication of the trend, with heatwaves extending into spring. Nairn further expressed hope that nations worldwide would agree to phase out fossil fuel consumption, a major contributor to climate change, during the upcoming U.N. climate talks.

However, countries with significant oil and gas resources have opposed this idea. Nairn called attention to the fact that eliminating fossil fuels would significantly reduce the impact of heatwaves and other extreme weather events. He acknowledged that this change cannot be achieved overnight, but stressed the importance of taking immediate action. While governments, organizations, and individuals work towards combatting climate change and its consequences, it is crucial for everyone to be aware of the ongoing heatwaves across the globe and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being.
