Drone Attack Kills US Troops in Jordan: Biden Blames Iran, Escalating Tensions in Middle East
x

A drone attack on a base in Jordan has resulted in the deaths of three American troops, with President Joe Biden blaming Iran-backed militants for the attack. The strike, which occurred near the borders with Iraq and Syria, has raised fears of wider conflict in the region, already tense due to the ongoing fighting in Gaza. Despite US and British accusations, Iran has denied any involvement in the attack, calling the accusations "baseless."

However, the White House has vowed a "very consequential" response to the attack, with National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stating that they do not seek a war with Iran, but will hold those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of their choosing. In the wake of the attack, there has been concern over the potential for a regional explosion, with Iran-backed Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri stating that the attack was a message to the American administration. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that a total of 34 personnel were wounded in the attack, with 8 requiring evacuation.

The conflict in the Middle East has become increasingly dangerous in recent weeks, with Iran-aligned militia groups being blamed for several attacks. The escalating tensions pose a significant challenge for Biden in an election year. There have been over 150 attacks on US and allied forces in Iraq and Syria since mid-October, with retaliatory strikes being carried out by Washington. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to widespread violence, and anger has grown across the region.

There have been near-daily exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon, and US forces are directly involved in various conflicts in the region. The United States and Britain have both carried out strikes targeting Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen, who have been attacking Red Sea shipping in support of Palestinians in Gaza for more than two months. The situation remains tense, with fears of further escalation in the region.
