Indian women's cricket team captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, has been handed a two-match ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for her outburst during the third and final One Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The incident occurred on July 24th, 2023, when Kaur expressed her dissatisfaction with an umpiring decision by smashing her bat on the stumps and gesturing in protest towards the umpire, Tanvir Ahmed.

The ICC stated that Kaur was found guilty of showing dissent at an umpire's decision, breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. Kaur was also fined 25 percent of her match fee for a separate offense of publicly criticizing the umpiring during the post-match ceremony.

The match officials recommended three demerit points for equipment damage and one demerit point for publicly criticizing the match officials. If Kaur's penalty is upheld, she will likely miss the first two games of the upcoming South Africa home series.

This is not the first time Kaur has been penalized for her on-field behavior. In the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2017 against Australia, she earned a demerit point for throwing her helmet on the ground and verbally attacking her partner.

Kaur's conduct has made her the first woman cricketer likely to be found guilty of a level-two breach of the ICC's code of conduct. Kaur's behavior has received criticism from former women's captain Diana Edulji, who described it as setting a bad example for her teammates.

Indian men's World Cup winner Madan Lal also criticized her behavior and called for strict disciplinary action from the Indian cricket authorities. Kaur's suspension means she will miss the start of the Asian Games, where India will be making their debut in cricket. Her deputy, Smriti Mandhana, will lead the team in her absence.

The final decision regarding Kaur's penalty lies with the ICC, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently in discussions with the ICC about the situation.
