He is facing the possibility of being sentenced to 20 years in prison if found guilty at the upcoming trial, for which he is to remain in custody at least until January 30. In December, President Vladimir Putin expressed his desire for Moscow and Washington to reach a resolution to secure Gershkovich's release, acknowledging that the talks were not straightforward. The U.S. embassy continues to call for the immediate release of the journalist, advocating for his rights and working towards a swift and just resolution to the situation.
